About the piece

"Smurkle" is a made up charater I was creating one day when I was working on how to draw the human face up to proportions of the mouth, nose, ears and how to make the visual of hair without lining out each strand. At the time, something like this was a massive improvement on my part in terms of both creating digital art and drawing the human head. This also was a piece where I experimented with my program's use of textured brushes; including watercolor, glowing/luminecsent brushes, brushes that mimicked a "spill/splatter", ink and airbrushes. Overall, this was a giant experimentation of what I would be able to do in the future using my art program.

The character Smurkle, on the other hand, didn't ever have a lot of development since he's just someone I draw if I am testing out specific materials, paper, programs, or if I really feel like improving my skills on drawing anything concerning the human race (clothing, human anatomy, facial expressions, etc.). However, I can see how a bit of personality can fit into this guy. First and foremost, he seems calm-minded - relaxed and not having a worry in the world. I also can see him being from somewhere with a warmer climate considering the tone of his skin: it's possible he doesn't even speak english and that he came from outside the USA.

While I can't really give much reason for his design I can however for his name. Why his name is "Smurkle" is simply because I and my classmate couldn't figure out a name, and words like "bubble","smuggle","smirk", and "struggle" kept us continuing this conversation until one of us fumbled our words and "Smurkle" was accidentally said among sounds like "Smeekle","Fargle", and "Barbles." It was quite silly, but I honestly don't think even 100 people are named Smurkle.
